Our Background

Like they say, sometimes the best moments are the ones you didn’t plan at all. In this case the moment turned into a business, and the planning part may have also included a few alcoholic beverages. A “slightly” tipsy girls night out* resulted in the merging of two hobby businesses to create the unique and quirky Eggplant + Poppy.

2014 saw us attending markets galore and a LOT of ground work carried out. With the opening of our store in the sunny CBD of Cairns, September 2015, we haven’t looked back on this business that was brought about by the shared love of seeking out the unique and quirky and bringing it all together to make gift buying easy and fun.

Our Philosophy

What we sell is so important for so many reasons – it’s what makes us different to every other gift & homewares store. We love bringing together the not-so-run-of-the-mill products that look, smell, & feel like no other. It also has to spark of bit that ol’ thing called joy – the rush you get when you buy someone (or even better….yourself) something that immediately makes you smile.

A good belly laugh will also rate high on our list when is comes to choosing stock for our store – who doesn’t find a Willy Warmer slightly hilarious??? Many of our products come from the smaller hand makers of the industry – and we know and appreciate how much time, attention & love that goes into their products. We too handmake many of our items including jewellery, stationery and some customised homewares products. Ahhhh the love of handmade – when time and effort cannot be measured in a monetary value – just quality & individuality. Our store is a treasure trove of all of the above, and on each visit you are sure to find something new & exciting.

Without our customers, we are simply a room with stock. It’s not until a purchase has been made that we become a shop - a business that supports staff & families. And that is why we want to make each customer feel special for choosing to purchase from Eggplant + Poppy. We treat each online sale with the same care and diligence that a customer standing in front of us would receive.
